After Hospital Recovery: Padsicles!

There are so many blogs with sooo many recipes for padsicles that we naturally (okay me) are adding to the sea of them. However, here I will explain to you first why I used each ingredient and then provide a step by step guide as to how to make them (and even how many you may need) based off of my own researching.

Ingredients:

Silver Gel

Witch Hazel

Aloe Vera (with Lidocaine!) (Mine had a pump cap already!)

Lavender Essential Oil

Generic Brand Overnight Pads (No Wings)

Freezer Ziploc Gallon Bags

Spray Bottle

Why these ingredients? Silver gel was used because silver is known for killing a wide range of bacteria and germs thus helping to prevent infections. Witch hazel contains chemicals called tannins and oils that can help reduce swelling and inflammation of your lady parts as well as close skin pores. Aloe Vera gel helps with the proper hydration of your skin and the lidocaine soothes and cools. And lastly lavender essential oil is also known to reduce inflammation and the smell is a natural scent which is recommended over getting scented pads! Also note I chose these generic pads ensuring they weren't scented and I know some will say that you should go for organic cotton and if you want to definitely go for it but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much money on something I will throw away repeatedly in a day. I also chose pads that do NOT have wings because I wear boyshort underwear and the wings just pull my underwear in uncomfortably. Also if you are given the mesh underwear from the hospital wings again would not work very well.

How to put them together:

1st- The witch hazel doesn’t come in the type of bottle you need so make sure you buy a spray bottle (I went to the travel section of walmart and bought the one pictured for $1). Pour your witch hazel into the spray bottle.

2nd- open up the pad (but don’t remove the liner protector on the sticky part) use the pump of the Aloe Vera and Make a squiggle from back to front (Many think just do the middle of the pad but after a lot of research we highly recommend a full coverage---which is especially beneficial if you have different degrees of tearing occur!)

3rd- Take the spray bottle of Witch Hazel and spray the pad from back to front. You don’t want it drenched but I would say I did 3-4 sprays to cover the entire pad.

4th- With Aloe in place and witch hazel sprayed...Take the tube of Silver gel and put a thin line from back to front (You will use less of this than the aloe & witch hazel)

5th- Next you add the Lavender essential oil. I put a few drops on the entire pad. 1 in an empty space at the back, 1 in the middle, and 1 at the front. Remember Lavender is strong, you don’t need a lot!

6th- So everything is on the pad and as weird as it may seem….close it back together. This may mean it gets on the wrapper too but just fold it back the way you undid it. Mine came in a thin purple “cotton mesh” and so I slid each one back into those.

7th- Lastly take those pads and put them in gallon storage bags. Depending on how big you bought how many fits will vary. I did 2 bags (1 bag of 8 & 1 bag of 7) and then stuck them in my freezer until I am ready to use!

How many do I make? So I searched online a lot to figure out how many of these I really needed and the reason I landed on 15 was because it also allowed me to take half of the pack that I bought and leave in the bathroom. Why? Well you likely won’t remember to go to the freezer every single time and to be stranded on the toilet with no pad is definitely something to avoid. Also many moms said that the hospital takes care of them for these (Mine does which is awesome!) So I won’t need any while there, can take my extras home from there as well if I have them, and 15 will cover a little less than a week. If I need more I have leftover supplies and can make more but many say they don’t use them every change, maybe 1 or 2 a day.

So hopefully this blog helps you out! Thanks for checking us out and this is Simply Us.

(UPDATE: I made an additional 10 that I used for my postpartum healing and that was all I needed)
